Pets learn best when given feedback at the very moment they are doing something, such as jumping on people, running off, or chasing other dogs. Remote training collars are designed to help provide immediate communication when we’re training our pets. Remote training collars enable us to give feedback instantly and consistently, even when dogs are off-leash and at a distance.  Ideal situations for using an e-collar in training include running in the yard, playing at the park, or working your dog in the field.

Also called e-collars or remote electronic dog training collars, remote trainers help to get your dog’s attention so he or she can focus or refocus on the task at hand. They are intended for two basic purposes:

• To reinforce behaviors that your dog already knows, like sit, stay and come. E-collar corrections help your dog pay attention to you and your commands.
• To correct unwanted behaviors like jumping up and digging. Your dog learns to avoid the correction by avoiding the unwanted behavior.
• Any other training times where you want to aid the dog in quickly and efficiently learning a new command or skill.

An electronic dog training collar works by sending a radio signal from a handheld remote control (transmitter) to a receiver collar the dog wears. This signal activates a mild stimulation that a dog can feel or hear, similar to a tap on the shoulder or a small static stimulation or vibration.

The remote trainers (or e-collars) of today should not be confused with the old style “shock collars” of the past. Today’s collars have adjustable levels and different types of stimulation (or sensations). The stimulation may be one of these sensations, depending on the type of collar:

• A beeping tone
• A vibration
• A static stimulation designed to get your dog’s attention without being harmful.
• Pets experience a tingling sensation that alerts them and interrupts their behavior so they will be more focused on you and your command.

When using an electronic dog training collar, very low levels of stimulation can cause even inattentive or stubborn dogs to learn commands quickly. To find the best intensity level for your pet, always start at the lowest level and work your way up. A slight change in your dog’s behavior, such as looking around in curiosity or flicking the ears, indicates the recognition level that is best for your dog.

Electronic remote training collars aid in the training of any dog.  They are convenient and lead to many great years of stress free dog and trainer relationships.  They allow your dog the freedom to move around in the yard or in the field, and run, play, hunt, or whatever else, and they allow you the freedom to safely control them via remote from wherever you need to be.  Remote electronic dog training collars are not harmful to your dog.  Your dog deserves the best training possible and these training tools greatly aid in that endeavor.  Try one out with confidence that you are doing your best to promote safe and effective training for your best friend!

The collar will be adjustable, much like a belt buckle type strap.  The collar should be snug, but not overly tight.  You should just be able to squeeze two fingers under the collar when the collar is adjusted properly.  Dogs with a lot of hair on the neck or thicker hair may need a more snug fit.  Longer contacts are available for dogs with extremely long and thick hair.  A good rule is that the collar should fit your dog’s neck so it doesn’t loosely spin around, but is not overly tight either.  Fit the collar with the collar box just under the neck, and then offset it a few inches to one side for best results.
